Digital Clothesline Project for the Blacksburg, Virginia Tech & New River Valley Communities
2020

Due to the circumstances accompanying COVID-19 in the Spring of 2020, there is no physical space for us to safety gather to bear witness our community’s annual Clothesline Project. However, this does not mean that we do not have the opportunity to experience this visual display. These 38 shirts represent the 600 that have become a part of our local Clothesline since its founding in 1994. The Clothesline Project is a visual testimony to the shattering effect of gender-based violence and the impact it has on society. Survivors of violence–and friends and families of victims–create shirts emblazoned with direct messages and strong illustrations.  The shirts express the pain and suffering of the survivors, aid in their healing process, and celebrate their strength and courage to overcome the past. Shirts are hung side by side on a clothesline, as if the survivors themselves were standing shoulder to shoulder, bearing witness to the violence committed on a daily basis.
